Where the Two Worlds Meet: Motherland

English Interview

Name: Rosa

Age: 48

Relationship to me: Mom

1) What are you most proud of?
To have been born in Mexico. I’m not really sure how to explain it.

2) What are you most ashamed of?
That I’ve been in the United States for quite some time and I still can’t speak English.

3) If you could go back and reverse one decision in your life, what would it be?
I would have gone to college.

4) What is your biggest dream in life?
To see you guys [my children] grow up and have a profession.

5) What difference would it make in your life if you felt completely safe, completely accepted, and completely loved?
I would feel more…happy and much more secure. There would be a big difference because I would be more happy if I had all of that.

6) Do you think your parents did a good job while you were growing up? Why or why not?
Well they did a good job because they taught me principles of life, values, and to work.

7) What’s one thing you wish people understood about you?
That immigrating to a foreign country is not easy.

8) What is your biggest personal shortcoming?
I believe everything people tell me … I’ve begun to realize that I need to analyze what people tell me before believing them.

9) What event in your life has shaped you most as a person?
Living in this country, away from my thirteen siblings and my parents, because I’ve had to confront many things by myself.

10) Have you ever treated a person in a way that you regret? What would you do differently if given the chance?
When I was in [elementary] school, there was a classmate I treated badly and, of course, if I had the opportunity I would treat her differently, because there was no reason to treat her that way.

11) Do you think it’s possible for men and women to be “just friends?”
Yes, because friendship shouldn’t be based on gender.

12) Would you rather be rich and lonely or financially destitute with lots of great family and friends? Why?
I would be poor, because I think that richness is getting along with people and the biggest richness is to be with your family.

13) Tell me about something you did when you were drunk that you’ve never confessed to anyone.
I’ve never gotten drunk.

14) If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be and why?
I would change my shyness because being shy has caused me to miss a lot of opportunities, because I’ve been too shy to accomplish them.

15) If you knew you would die tomorrow, how would you spend today?
Well if I knew…I would call my family members and say my farewells and I would hug all the people who are close to me.

16) Are you truly happy? Why or why not?
Yes because, first of all, I am healthy and second, because I have my kids and my husband.

17) Have you ever been in love? How do you know, and what was it like for you?
Yes, I’ve been in love. I know because you feel that excitement in you and you feel like seeing the person. It was a nice experience because I was experiencing love for the first time.

18) When you’re home alone and nobody else is around, how do you like to spend your time?
Hmmm…relax.

19) What do you want people to say at your funeral?
Well nothing… just to pray to God for my soul and that’s it.

20) If you could have a conversation with anyone dead or alive, who would it be and why?
It would be with someone dead… and that person would be my mom because I miss her a lot. I would like to talk to her again about many things and be able to see her.

21) Do you think you’re a genuinely good person? Why or why not?
I try to be a good person, but I’m not always one. I try to be a good person because being a good person brings you more happiness than being a bad person.

22) How did you choose your current profession? Are you glad with your profession, or would you rather be doing something different?
I’m a house keeper and I didn’t choose to be one, I just ended up with this job. I would’ve liked to have a different job, like being a teacher.

23) If money was not an issue, how would you spend your time each day?
Relaxeing…. Maybe I would practice a sport? And I would travel or study.

24) Tell me about your political leanings. Have they changed since you were younger? How were they developed?
When I used to vote in Mexico, I would always vote for the PAN [National Action Party] that helped and had more support towards the country, or at least accomplished more of the things they promised when running for their position, in comparison to other parties. They haven’t changed or developed.

25) What’s one thing that you do on a regular basis that you absolutely hate doing, but nobody knows how you feel about it?
Waking up early.
