Music For You: The Scientist

Candice Wu

Hi! I have a surprise for you. Another cover? You’re absolutely right! In my second post, many of you wanted me to cover The Scientist by Coldplay, so here I am with the cover.

To me, this song is about a person who made a terrible mistake that led to the ending of his or her relationship. This person, instead of accepting the feelings that were being given to them, analyzed why the person was emitting these feelings or emotions and was unable to reciprocate. This person looked at the relationship through the eyes of a scientist, focusing only on the quantitative results and not the qualitative. Knowing that the love of their life is lost, this person desperately tried to fix his or her mistakes. He or she wanted to return the relationship to how it was in the beginning; full of young, expressive, and naive love, but they were too late.

I first heard this song in my freshman year of high school, three years ago. I used to sing and play it all the time, over and over again. For some time, I had completely forgotten about this song, but as I began to listen to it again, I fell in love with it again. The emotion in the singer’s voice are just absolutely amazing. The instruments used, like the piano and the acoustic guitar, also go with the singer’s voice perfectly. They’re really harmonious with each other. Its as if the instruments are singing with the singer. I’ve never experienced the kind of pain and regret expressed in this song before, but I understood immediately what this song was trying to convey. It always leaves me with a sad, sullen mood because it is so emotional and touching. I don’t want to depress you, but I hope I’m able to convey the emotions properly so that you are also able to empathize. I hope you enjoy.
