Idioms 4 Idiots: An Intro with my Head in the Clouds

Hello and welcome to Idioms for Idiots. I’m Elsie and this is moi column! In I4I, I want to focus on those idioms we hear everyday but never really think about. But before I can do any of that, I should probably define idiom so we’re on the same page. Oh wait, that’s one right there!

id·i·om
/ˈidēəm/
noun A group of words established by usage as having a meaning not deducible from those of the individual words.deducible from those of the individual words.

Now that we’re seeing eye to eye, I can tell you about my idioms’ medium: collage. I like collage because it uses many different distinct elements to create an entirely different and new whole.

For my first collage, I made a small piece inspired by the phrase, “head in the clouds.” The phrase has relatively unknown origins, but has been in use since the mid-1600s. It is meant to describe someone who isn’t realistic and tends to dream up things that are too lofty to undertake. I took a very literal approach to this one, and literally put my heads into the clouds.

Anyways, that’s all for this post. See y’all in the next one!
