The Perfect Ballad: Happier

Matthew Chen

Finding my voice has been an ongoing challenge that relates to singing, public speaking and just finding my voice in society. Over time, singing has been the vehicle that has helped me discover my voice and the mode that allows me to express myself above all others. I’ve worked on many different aspects that relate to singing because tone, style, tenor, pitch, and personality are all important. Three years ago, when I reluctantly joined my middle school’s choir, I didn’t know what I was getting myself into. It began as a chore, waking up at 7 am. and dragging myself into the unfamiliar choir room. I never expected that singing would become a great passion. But as the weeks went on, and we started to sing more, I realized that singing was something I truly enjoyed. Choir went from a chore to becoming a delight.

Fast forward to my cycle at The Wave and my first true studio recording! We have finished tracking, mixing and now it is almost ready to be released. To tide you over, I decided to sing Ed Sheeran’s “Happier.” This song is one of my all-time favorites, as it is also written by my favorite singer. It’s a great listen, whether you’re in the car, in your bedroom or even the bathroom. It makes some people cry, with undeniable emotion, as Ed Sheeran sings about the heartbreak that comes with a relationship. The piano in the song really makes the song special and highlights the voice beautifully. I hope you enjoy my cover; see ee you in my next post, the release of what hopefully is The Perfect Ballad!
